Before you cross

What you need to book and cross the border

Everything to sort before you leave Zagreb. Bosnia is not part of the EU, so you will need additional documents for a smooth crossing at Stara Gradiška.

Croatia Cross Border Car Rental Requirements

Your booking voucher and rental must include the supplier’s written approval to enter Bosnia & Herzegovina. It cannot be added at the counter.

Required at pickup for the refundable security deposit. Debit card deposits are generally denied and may be accepted in some cases with higher deposits and additional insurance.

Bosnia dropped the legal Green Card requirement in August 2021, but border security officers still check vehicle registration and an insurance certificate.

The Gradiška–Banja Luka motorway has a toll. Euros are usually accepted, but change is given in KM. Street parking and small cafés may only take KM.

EU and UK licences fully valid. Non-Latin script licences must be accompanied by an IDP (International Driving Permit). Minimum driver age should be 21.

Bosnia is not in the EU, so border checks apply. Everyone needs a valid passport. Non-EU visitors may also need a quick fingerprint and photo check when re-entering Croatia.

Stara Gradiška: Croatia exit → Bosnia entry

A quick overview of the process involved at each stage of the border to save you from last-minute surprises.

⬅️

Croatian exit control

An officer checks every passenger’s passport in the car. Keep your rental agreement and insurance certificate together within easy reach to save time when cars queue behind you.

➡️

Bosnian entry control (Gradiška)

Officers check your passports and look for the written cross-border authorisation on your rental agreement. Cars without proper documents cannot cross and are often turned away.

🚗

Driving rules in Bosnia

The speed limit is 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on open roads, and 130 km/h on motorways. Headlights stay on at all times. Your rental must come with a warning triangle.

↩️

Return: Bosnia exit → Croatia re-entry

Standard duty-free allowances apply. Return queues at Stara Gradiška can be 1–2 hours long in peak travel season. Non-EU travellers may need fingerprint and photo checks under the EES system. Try to return early on a weekday.

Waits of 20–60 minutes are common on regular days. Delays of 1–2 hours are common on weekends in July–August and around holidays. Weekdays are generally the quietest, and Friday and Sunday evenings are the busiest.

A rental quote for this journey alone does not allow you to take the car into Bosnia. Your rental agreement must also specifically include written permission for your intended destination before you cross.

🚗

Can I take any type of rental car from Zagreb to travel into Bosnia?

Not always. Standard cars are usually allowed for cross-border travel. Large-size and premium vehicle segments are more likely to be limited to travelling within Croatia only. Check the car category before you book it for a trip from Zagreb to Bosnia.

Car typeUsually approved for Bosnia?
Economy and compactUsually yes
Family cars and SUVsOften yes, but may cost more or have limits
Premium and luxuryOften restricted
Vans and minivansOften not allowed
Electric and special vehiclesCheck with the supplier

📄

What documents do I need to take a rental car from Croatia into Bosnia and Herzegovina?

A standard set of documentation required for taking a cross-border rental car outside Croatia is as follows:

DocumentWhat to know
Valid passportNeeded for every passenger
Full driving licenceHeld for at least 12 months; minimum driver age is 21
IDP (International Driving Permit)Only needed for non-Latin script licences
Credit cardIn the main driver’s name, for the deposit
Booking voucher and rental agreementMust show the supplier’s written approval for Bosnia
Vehicle registration and insurance certificateProvided by the supplier. Your supplier may call this a Green Card

👨‍✈️

Can a second driver take the rental car from Zagreb to Banja Luka?

Yes, a second driver listed in the rental agreement can take the car for this route. Any additional driver is subject to the same age and licence requirements as the main driver for cross-border travel to Bosnia.

Additional drivers are optional extras that incur extra fees, which vary by supplier and are often displayed on the booking summary page before you confirm the booking.

🚗

Can a non-EU citizen cross from Croatia into Bosnia and Herzegovina with a rental car?

Yes. Rental car terms are usually the same for all travellers, except for your passport. Travellers who need a visa for Bosnia can enter without one if they hold a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa. These stays are limited to 30 days at a time.

Where you are fromBosnia entry
EU and EEA countriesNo visa needed for up to 90 days in any 180-day period
UK, US, Canada, AustraliaNo visa needed for up to 90 days in any 180-day period
Other countriesCheck visa rules with the nearest Bosnian embassy before you travel

Because Bosnia is outside the Schengen area, you leave and re-enter it on this trip. If you need a Schengen visa for Croatia, make sure it allows multiple entries. Non-EU visitors may also need a fingerprint and photo check as per the EES system when they return to Croatia.

🛡️

Is my rental car insurance valid in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Yes, as long as your supplier has approved the trip in writing. Cross-border rentals from Croatia provide mandatory Third Party Liability coverage. Many deals also include added CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and Theft Protection as added benefits.

Unauthorised cross-border travel without the supplier’s written approval invalidates your CDW and third-party liability cover. Vehicle damage and third-party claims in such cases, and those caused by any unregistered drivers in the rental agreement, are to be borne by the main driver. Some suppliers may also charge additional fines.

CoverIn Bosnia
Third-party liabilityCovered with the insurance certificate from the supplier
CDW and theft protectionValid only if Bosnia is approved in writing. Ask whether limits apply abroad
Super CDW or full coverDepends on the supplier. Check the terms before you book
Tyres, glass, undercarriageNot covered by standard CDW

🔁

Can I pick up a rental car in Zagreb and drop it off in Banja Luka?

Sometimes, but not with all suppliers. A drop-off in another country is called an international one-way rental. Since the route counts as cross-border travel, you will need the supplier’s written approval for the journey.

Some suppliers offer it on request to selected locations abroad for an extra drop-off fee (based on your chosen car type and route). Many may allow the journey but require you to return the car to where you picked it up in Croatia, and some do not allow it at all.

💶

How much does it cost to book a one-way car rental from Zagreb to Banja Luka?

Rental quotes vary based on your preferences, such as car type, booking duration, optional add-ons, and supplier terms. Meaning there is no single price. The total booking price can include several parts:

CostWhat to expect
Daily rateDepends on season, car and supplier. Shown in your search results
International drop-off feeNo fixed amount. Quoted by the supplier for this route
Cross-border feeAbout €56–€112.50 per rental with most suppliers; some charge per day with a cap
Croatian motorway tollsThe A3 motorway from Zagreb is tolled. Pay at the booths by cash or card
Bosnian motorway tollSmall toll of a few KM (under €2) on the Gradiška–Banja Luka motorway

💳

Is the Zagreb to Banja Luka cross-border fee charged per day or per rental?

Most suppliers charge a flat fee per rental, regardless of your booking duration. A few suppliers may also charge a per-day cross-border fee.

Fee typeExampleHow it works
Flat fee per rentalEnterprise, Alamo: €60 (incl. VAT)Same price for 1 day or 10 days
Per day, with a capSixt: €11.20 per day, max €56 per rentalThe cap is reached after 5 days

A short trip can cost less with a per-day fee. A one-day rental, let’s say with Sixt, would cost just €11.20, while flat-fee suppliers charge the full amount even for a day trip.

🚘

Can I drive a Croatian rental car from Banja Luka to other places in Bosnia?

Yes. With the supplier’s written authorisation for cross-border travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina, you can drive anywhere in the country, including Banja Luka.

PlaceFrom Banja Luka
Krupa na Vrbasu25–30 min
Jajce~1.5 hours
Una National Park2.5–3 hours

You cannot continue into a third country, such as Serbia or Montenegro, unless your rental agreement also specifies it. Inform the supplier of every country you may enter, even if you only pass through.

🌞

Can I drive a rental car from Zagreb to Banja Luka for a day trip?

Yes, but it is a long day trip. The drive takes more than 2.5 hours each way, plus border time.

Part of the tripTime to allow
Zagreb to Banja LukaAround 2.5 hours
Border crossing, each way20–60 minutes usually; 1–2 hours on peak days
Banja Luka to ZagrebAround 2.5 hours
Total driving and border timeAbout 7–8 hours

Leave early, and plan your return so you reach Zagreb before closing time at your drop-off location. Refill the tank as per the agreed-upon fuel policy before you return the car to avoid a missing fuel fee and additional charges.

🚗

What if I’m late for car drop-off? Can I return the car after opening hours?

Often yes, especially at the airport. Zagreb Airport suppliers often offer after-hours returns, and some operate around the clock and accept returns at any hour. City centre supplier branches usually have set office hours and a staffed return.

For late returns, many suppliers can charge an extra day if you return the car after the agreed time. A grace period (usually 30-60 minutes) may be allowed if you inform the supplier about expected delays.
