⚠️
Sedan vs SUV: A luxury sedan handles equally well and is easier to park in old town areas on coastal Croatian roads. Opt for an SUV for drives onto mountain routes (Lovćen, Velebit) or island roads on Hvar, Brač, or Korčula.

Price Comparison
Manual vs Automatic: Price by Category
Prices for manual and automatic transmission options between different categories tend to vary.
| Category | Manual from | Automatic from | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | €25/day | €40–45/day | +€15–20/day |
| Compact | €30/day | €45–50/day | +€15–20/day |
| Mid-size / Compact SUV | €45/day | €60–65/day | +€15–20/day |
| Standard SUV | €52/day | €67–72/day | +€15–20/day |
| Premium SUV / Luxury | €87–90/day | €87–90/day | No meaningful premium – automatic is the default |
⚠️
Where the premium is smallest: Automatic costs about the same extra amount whether you book economy or an SUV. The only time you won’t pay more is if you opt for luxury – automatics are already standard there. Economy and compact cars are the hardest to find in automatic, so book those earliest.
Ideal For
When an Automatic Rental Makes Sense in Croatia
The need for an automatic vehicle is based on your itinerary and driving comfort, but it is often worth the money on these occasions.
🌊 First-time drivers on the Dalmatian coast
Split to Dubrovnik coastal road is steep into old towns. An automatic removes one major source of stress on unfamiliar roads.
VW Golf
Škoda Octavia
🏝️ Island travel and hilly terrain
Roads on Hvar, Korčula, and Brač islands are steep and narrow, requiring frequent gear changes. Stop-start ferry queues and hill driving are far less tiring with automatics.
Fiat 500X
Škoda Kamiq
👧 Travelling with kids
A clutch-free system allows you to pay full attention to the road and route while one parent handles navigation.
Škoda Karoq
VW Tiguan
💼 Comfortable business trips
Luxury vehicles are usually automatic, so travellers don’t have to worry about transmission. Confirm if you’re booking from a budget-friendly vehicle segment.

Booking Tips
5 things to know before booking an automatic car in Croatia
Below are a couple of useful tips to keep in mind so the price and the car you get match what you expected.
High peak-season demand
Book 3–4 weeks ahead for travel plans in July and August, especially in economy and compact. Automatics are in lower supply and are the first to sell out due to peak season.
Confirm transmission in writing
Get the transmission type confirmed on your voucher or in writing from the supplier, not just selected as a filter, especially in popular car segments with fewer automatic options.
Expect a daily premium
Automatics can add an extra €15–20/day to the base rate across regular categories. It may be a standard inclusion in luxury rentals.
Insurance rules don’t change
Basic rental insurance is priced and applied the same no matter which transmission. The same is true for coverage terms and deductibles across all transmission types. A security deposit of €1,000- €2,000 is required in any case.
Choose a hybrid automatic for long road trips
Hybrid cars are automatic by default and can save fuel on longer coastal stretches, such as the D8. Since hybrid models are less common, it’s best to book them well in advance.
Availability by Category
Where Automatic stock runs tight – and where it doesn’t
Automatic availability varies by vehicle type. Here’s where you can find the widest selection of vehicles and where booking early can make the most difference.
ℹ️
Most economy rental cars in Croatia are manual, so automatic versions often sell out first – particularly in July and August. The compact, full-size, and SUV categories require 2-3 weeks’ early booking to get good availability during peak season. Premium and luxury vehicles are almost always automatic, but smaller fleet sizes mean availability can still be limited. Automatic vans and minivans are the hardest to find and should be booked as early as possible.

🅰️
Where can I book an automatic car rental in Croatia?
Automatics are available through major international and Croatian companies alike, at airports, city centres, ports, and marinas. Use your travel details to find deals available at your preferred location through our booking form.
ℹ️ Local suppliers sometimes carry a smaller automatic fleet than the international brands, so it’s worth checking availability directly if you’re set on a specific category.
📆
How early should you rent an automatic car?
Booking 3–4 weeks in advance is recommended for July–August travel, especially if you need an economy and compact car. Automatics may be smaller than their manual counterparts in Croatian rental fleets, and the number may be further reduced as peak season approaches.
✅ A week or two ahead is usually enough to reserve a car during the shoulder season (May–June, September–October).
➡️
Can I book one-way automatic car rental in Croatia?
Yes. One-way rentals are available on popular routes like Split to Dubrovnik and Zagreb to Split. A drop-off fee generally applies based on your chosen car type and the distance between the pickup and return locations. One-way rentals for automatic transmission may be available in limited numbers, so you should book earlier than a standard round-trip rental.
⚠️ Confirm the specific automatic vehicle and one-way fee together at booking, since combining them further reduces available inventory.
💶
How much does it cost to rent an automatic car in Croatia?
Automatic rental cars usually cost €15–20 more per day than manual cars. Prices can also vary by season, location, supplier, and individual traveller preferences.
| Season | Months | Automatic compact price |
| Low | Jan–Apr | €38–66/day |
| Shoulder | May–Jun | €48–86/day |
| Peak | Jul–Aug | €75–120/day |
| Shoulder | Sep–Oct | €52–92/day |
| Low | Nov–Dec | €40–66/day |
ℹ️ Note: The automatic surcharge stays about the same year-round; seasonal demand tends to affect the base rental price.
💳
Is a credit card required to book an automatic rental car in Croatia?
Yes. A credit card (not a debit card) is the standard payment method used by suppliers to hold the security deposit, regardless of the transmission type. The card must usually be in the main driver’s name.
✅ Check whether your travel companion can be registered as the main driver and use their card to book if you don’t have a personal credit card. You can be added as an additional driver in that situation.
🛡️
Can I rent an automatic car without a security deposit?
No. A security deposit of about €1,000–1,200 is required by nearly all suppliers. The requirement is applicable to both manual and automatic transmission vehicles. As long as the car is returned undamaged and with no traffic fines, the deposit is released in full within 7-21 days.
⚠️ Make sure your credit card has sufficient available credit to cover both the deposit and your trip expenses.
🛡️
Do I need additional insurance for automatic car rentals?
Car rentals in Croatia often include standard third-party liability as a legal requirement, along with CDW and theft protection. But you may still be liable to pay an excess, depending on the car type and supplier. Damage to tyres, glass, the undercarriage, and the roof is not covered by standard insurance, which is why travellers often purchase a Full Protection or Super CDW upgrade to avoid out-of-pocket expenses in case of any damage.
💡 Check what’s already covered in your existing insurance policy to avoid an unnecessary purchase. For example, itineraries restricted to well-maintained city roads might not actually need underbody protection.
🧑
What’s the minimum age to rent an automatic in Croatia?
Although renters at least 21 years old are widely accepted by suppliers, those as young as 18 may be allowed to hire compact or economy cars. Drivers under the required minimum age that varies by supplier are subject to a surcharge.
| Requirement | Typical range |
| Minimum age | 18+ (varies by supplier) |
| Age without young-driver surcharge | 21–25+ (varies by supplier) |
| Young driver surcharge | ~€7–10/day |
| Minimum licence history | 1–2 years |
✅ Read the terms and conditions of a suitable deal to confirm driver age and licence eligibility before making a reservation.
🆔
Do I need an International Driving Permit for an automatic rental car in Croatia?
Drivers with EU and EEA licences are generally recognised by local suppliers. An IDP (International Driving Permit) must be accompanied by your original licence if you use a non-Latin alphabet (e.g. Arabic, Japanese, Chinese) or are from a non-EU country.
ℹ️ You must carry both your domestic licence and your IDP at all times, as transmission type makes no difference to the legal requirements of driving in Croatia.
⛽
What is the fuel policy for automatic car rentals?
The most common fuel policy in Croatia is Full-to-Full, under which the car is provided with a full tank and must be returned full. Other options for renters also include:
| Policy | How it works | What it means for renters |
| Full-to-Full | Pick up full, return full | Best value – recommended |
| Same-to-Same | Pick up at a set level, return at the same level | Acceptable, but verify the level at pickup |
✅ Always fill up before returning the car as per the agreed-upon fuel policy; a missing fuel charge, along with a service fee, will be charged by the supplier.
🧳
Is driving an automatic rental car easy for travellers in Croatia?
Yes. Automatics are generally the easier choice for visitors. Travellers find them particularly useful on the steep old-town approaches in Dubrovnik and Split. Coastal drives on the Adriatic highway and congested multi-lane traffic on city centre roundabouts are easier to manage with automatics.
⛴️
Can I take an automatic rental car on a ferry to Croatian islands?
Yes, but you must take the supplier’s prior approval for ferry crossings with rental vehicles. An additional ferry crossing fee often applies as per supplier policies. Not all suppliers permit ferry crossing with a rental and not for all car categories.
⚠️ Since availability of automatic cars is more limited, confirm with your supplier and book both the car and the car ferry ticket separately in advance, as spaces to Croatia islands tend to fill up much faster in summer.
🛂
Is cross-border rental available for automatic cars in Croatia?
Yes, but you must confirm with the rental company in advance and may need a cross-border permit and additional insurance (green card). This applies the same way regardless of transmission type.
| Destination | Usually Allowed? |
| Slovenia | ✅ Yes |
| Italy | ✅ Yes |
| Austria | ✅ Often permitted |
| Bosnia & Herzegovina | ⚠️ Approval required |
| Montenegro | ⚠️ Approval required |
⚠️ Unauthorised cross-border travel will void your rental insurance and may result in hefty fines from the supplier. Also, purchase a Slovenian e-vignette online before entering the motorway network if you plan to use Slovenian motorways.
