Yes. A fee is charged per additional driver per day at most suppliers, though a first additional driver may be allowed at no extra charge in some deals. You can add an extra driver from the available add-ons list on the booking summary page. Additional drivers must be present at pickup with their own valid driving licence and passport or ID, and meet the same driver’s age requirements as the main driver.

ℹ️ Any driver not listed on the rental agreement is uninsured. If an unlisted driver is involved in an accident, all insurance coverage is typically voided, and repair costs fall entirely on the primary renter.

All vehicles in Croatia are required to have Third Party Liability (TPL) insurance, including rental cars. That’s why TPL is a standard rental inclusion, along with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP). But these still carry an excess amount that the renter is liable to pay in the event of damage or theft.

🚫 Standards CDW does not cover damage to tyres, glass, roof, underbody, or interior. Upgrading to an appropriate policy can help cover vehicle damage caused by gravel surfaces and low-clearance tracks on Istrian coastal roads.

💡 Some credit cards include CDW excess coverage. Check before purchasing an SCDW upgrade – you may already be covered.

A pre-authorisation hold is placed on the main driver’s credit card at pickup. This is not a charge, but the amount is temporarily blocked for your use until the vehicle is released without any damage or traffic fines.

⚠️ Security deposit holds can take 7–21 business days to release after the car hire return, depending on your bank and the supplier. Factor this into your card’s available credit before travel, especially during peak summer, when multiple holds throughout your trip can stack.

You can use a debit card to book a rental car, but it is not accepted for the security deposit hold by most major suppliers in Croatia. Higher deposits and additional insurance may be required by suppliers for deposits made by debit card.

✅ If a travel companion holds a credit card, they may be registered as the main driver with you added as an additional driver.

Rabac has a colour-coded on-street parking system, similar to the rest of Croatia. Paid zones are marked with blue kerb stripes, free parking with white stripes, and reserved bays with yellow markings. You can pay by cash/coins at parking meters or via SMS or a local parking app in some areas.

⚠️ In July and August, paid parking in central Rabac and along the beach front fills up by mid-morning. Arriving before 9 am or using upper car parks and walking down is more reliable than circling for a seafront bay.

Croatia uses a closed toll system, wherein you take a ticket on entry and pay on exit based on the distance travelled. Not all, but the main toll roads from Rabac on the Istrian Y motorway (A8/A9) are as follows:

Driving in and around Rabac is quite easy for most visitors. Travellers arriving by air find driving simple on the D66 highway between Pula and Rabac. But road conditions can change when driving out of Rabac downtown.

ℹ️ Google Maps and Waze both work reliably throughout Istria. Download offline maps before travelling to areas with weak mobile coverage.

Cross-border travel is permitted after the rental company’s prior authorisation. Standard deals do not include cross-border travel by default, so you must confirm whether it’s allowed by the supplier for your preferred destination. It’s best to do it before booking rather than at the rental counter. A cross-border fee will apply, depending on your chosen car type and the destination country.

🚫 Driving across a border without the supplier’s written authorisation voids your insurance entirely. You are personally liable for all costs in case you are involved in an unauthorised travel accident.

⚠️ The most practical cross-border day trips are often made from Rabac and Istria into Slovenia and Italy (Trieste). Both are within a 90–120-minute drive and are within the Schengen area.

Yes. Slovenia requires a motorway vignette (e-vignette) for all vehicles using its motorway network. The system is fully digital, so no physical sticker is required. Payment is made online before travel at the official Dars portal, or at petrol stations and post offices near the Slovenian border.

🚫 Driving on Slovenian motorways without a valid e-vignette can result in on-the-spot fines of €300 or more. The vignette must be registered to the rental vehicle’s licence plate.

💡 Italy has no general motorway vignette. Italian autostrada tolls are paid at staffed or automated booths per journey section. Keep coins or a card accessible when driving in Italy.

The full-to-full fuel policy is the most common in Rabac, as in other Croatian locations. You collect the car with a full tank and return it full. If you return the vehicle with the tank below full, the supplier charges for the missing fuel at a rate well above the pump price, along with a refuelling service fee.

💡 Fill up at the nearest fuel station from the drop-off location. It takes 10 minutes and avoids a supplier fuel charge that can add €30–80 to your final bill.
