Before you cross

What you need to book and cross the border

Everything to sort before you leave Zagreb. Slovenia is also in the Schengen area, so the crossing is simple, but your rental still needs the right approval.

Croatia Cross Border Car Rental Requirements

Book specifically for travel to Slovenia and declare it at pickup. The rental agreement must include cross-border details. You cannot add it at the border.

Required at pickup for the refundable security deposit. Debit cards are often refused, or may require a higher deposit and insurance.

A Green Card is not needed for Slovenia. Keep your rental agreement and the car’s registration papers inside the car in case police ask.

Slovenian motorways need an e-vignette linked to the car’s plate. Ask if it is included. If not, buy the 7-day pass (€16) online before you drive.

EU and UK licences are fully valid. Non-Latin script licences must come with an IDP (International Driving Permit). Minimum driver age is usually 21.

There is no routine passport check, but carry one anyway. Random police checks can happen. Non-EU visitors should always carry a passport.

Border crossings

Which crossing to use from Zagreb

Choose your crossing based on your route and expected queues. Border waits can change significantly during summer and peak travel periods.

CrossingDistance from ZagrebDrive TimePeak waitNotes
Bregana–Obrežje Recommended~30 km~30 min to border0–20 minDirect motorway to Ljubljana (A3 → A2). Best choice for almost every trip.
Harmica–Rigonce~30 km~40 min to border0–10 minQuieter road via Zaprešić. Useful if the motorway is busy, but slower overall.
Jurovski Brod–Metlika~85 km~1 hr 15 min to border0–10 minSouthern route via Karlovac. Good if you are visiting Bela Krajina or Novo Mesto first.

At the checkpoint – step by step

Bregana: Croatia exit → Slovenia entry

A quick overview of the process involved at each stage of the border to save you from last-minute surprises.

⬅️

Croatian exit control

Both countries are Schengen members, so there’s no routine passport check at the border. You will need to pay a small toll at the Bregana gate before crossing using cash or card.

➡️

Entering Slovenia (Obrežje)

Also usually a free flow. Slovenia is currently running occasional random checks rather than stopping every car, mainly to check ID and vehicle documents – keep your rental agreement in the glovebox just in case.

🚗

Driving rules in Slovenia

50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Headlights must stay on. Your rental should include a first-aid kit, warning triangle and hi-vis vest.

↩️

Return: Slovenia exit → Croatia re-entry

The EU Entry/Exit System only applies at the outer edge of the Schengen area. Croatia and Slovenia are both inside it. Meaning that there are no EES fingerprint or photo checks when you cross.

Bregana gets busiest on summer Friday and Sunday afternoons, when coastal traffic mixes with Zagreb-Ljubljana commuters. Cross mid-morning or in the evening to skip the queue.

Once you Arrive

What to do in Ljubljana with a rental car

The best day trips and stops around Ljubljana, ranked by how far they are from the city.

Old Town & Ljubljana Castle

Walk across Triple Bridge and browse the riverside cafés along the Ljubljanica. Since the city centre is mostly car-free, you can park the car in a garage nearby. Ride the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle for the best city views. The castle courtyard is free to enter.

Postojna Cave

Ride an electric train deep underground and then walk through halls filled with limestone formations. The tour takes about 90 minutes. The cave is cold all year, so bring a jacket. Book a time slot online in summer.

Lake Bled

A mountain lake with a tiny island church and a castle on the cliffs. It is 55 km northwest of the city. Walk the lakeside path and try the local cream cake (kremšnita). Arrive early in summer because car parks fill up by mid-morning.

Predjama Castle

A medieval castle built into a 123 m cliff. It is just 9 km past Postojna Cave. Easy to visit with the cave in one day. The castle is open year-round, but the cave beneath it opens only in summer.

Lake Bohinj

Slovenia’s largest permanent lake and quieter than Bled. Swim or paddle in summer or take the Vogel cable car for Alpine views. Best visited as a full-day trip.

Piran

A Venetian-style seaside town, about 120 km from the capital, on Slovenia’s short Adriatic coast. Wander Tartini Square and climb the church tower for sea views. Car access to the old town is restricted; park at the edge and walk.

Parking costs about €1.70/hour in the central zone and less in outer areas. Cars are not allowed in the Old Town. Use the nearby parking area and walk in.

🛂

Can I take a cross-border rental car from Zagreb to Ljubljana?

Yes. Most suppliers allow travel from Croatia to Slovenia, but you need the supplier’s written approval before you cross. Tell them at booking that you plan to drive to Slovenia, and check that the approval appears on your rental agreement. Not every supplier or car category is included, so check this before you book.

The supplier’s written authorisation extends your insurance and rental terms into Slovenia. Driving into Slovenia without the supplier’s approval cancels your insurance. You would be fully responsible for all costs related to vehicle damage or third-party claims in that case.

🛡️

Does rental car insurance from Croatia cover Slovenia?

Yes. The standard cover on your Croatian rental continues into Slovenia with the supplier’s written permission for cross-border travel. You do not need a Green Card, as Slovenia is in the EU.

CoverValid in Slovenia?What it does
Third Party LiabilityYes, with approvalCovers damage or injury to others
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)Yes, with approvalLimits your cost for damage to the car, up to the excess
Theft ProtectionYes, with approvalLimits your cost if the car is stolen, up to the excess
Wheels, glass, undercarriageOnly if you added itCovers tyres, windscreen and underbody damage

Any level of insurance coverage is void without the supplier’s written authorisation. The rules are the same as for any other cross-border trip.

Do I need an International Driving Permit for cross-border travel to Slovenia?

An IDP is only valid together with your original licence. It cannot replace it.

🚗

Can I rent a luxury car from Zagreb to Ljubljana?

Yes. Luxury and premium car hire options are available in Zagreb. Cross-border rules can be stricter for these categories than for economy or standard cars. Some suppliers do not allow luxury categories to leave Croatia at all, while others allow it with approval and different terms. Always confirm availability of a preferred car with the supplier before you book.

Check before bookingWhy it matters
Written approval for SloveniaApproval is given per car category. A luxury car may not be included.
Deposit amountPremium cars often carry a larger deposit hold on your credit card.
Excess and extra coverRepair costs are higher. Check the excess and any add-on cover.
Minimum age and licence historySome categories set a higher minimum age or charge a young driver fee.

Which border crossing should I use from Zagreb to Ljubljana?

Use the Bregana–Obrežje crossing on the motorway. It is the most direct route and the best choice for almost every trip. Slovenia no longer runs routine border checks. Hence the choice depends on route and driving time, not queues.

CrossingDistance from ZagrebBest for

SituationWhat to expect
Normal weekdayAbout 1 hr 45 min
July–August weekendsCoast-bound traffic can slow the motorway near Bregana. Allow extra time.
Winter snow or iceSlower driving. Winter tyre rules apply.

🚧

Are there border checks between Croatia and Slovenia?

There are no routine border checks. Slovenia ended checks at the Croatian border on 11 June 2026. Police may still do occasional random checks. Keep your passport or ID and your rental papers within reach.

Croatia and Slovenia are both inside the Schengen area. Hence, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) does not apply here. There are no EES fingerprint or photo checks at this border.

🎫

Do I need a Slovenian e-vignette for my rental car?

Yes. The e-vignette is a digital pass for Slovenian motorways and expressways, and it is linked to your car’s licence plate. Croatia does not use a vignette, meaning that you do not need one until you cross into Slovenia. Rental cars from Croatia usually don’t have a Slovenian vignette, so ask your supplier or check the official DARS e-Vignette Portal.

VignettePrice for a car
7 days€16
1 month€32
1 year€117.50

There is no single-day option, so you will need to buy the minimum 7-day pass valid for 7 days in a row. Buy it online or at a petrol station, and keep the confirmation email. You can buy the vignette after you pick up the car.

🔁

Can I pick up a car in Zagreb and return it in Ljubljana?

Yes, if your supplier allows it. This is an international one-way rental. You need the supplier’s cross-border travel approval, and a one-way drop-off fee usually applies too.

ItemWhat to expect
Cross-border approvalNeeded, as for any trip into Slovenia.
One-way drop-off feeCharged once per rental. It is usually higher than a same-country one-way.
