Who It’s For

When a Luxury Rental Makes Sense in Croatia

The need for a luxury vehicle is based on your itinerary and driving comfort, but it is often worth the money on these occasions.

💼 Business travel and client trips

Travellers flying into Zagreb for work and further continuing to Split or Dubrovnik the next day. A BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class are best choices for comfort and flexibility.

👫 Couples and leisure travel

A coastal drive from Dubrovnik down to Kotor, out along Pelješac, or up the Makarska Riviera is well worth it in a luxury or premium sedan model.

🏄 Mountain and national park driving

Plitvice roads are paved all the way and offer an easy drive. A steep drive up to Lovćen or the gravel stretch into Northern Velebit can be better managed by an SUV with higher ground clearance.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families that need space and comfort

A Mercedes GLC comfortably carries 5 adults and 4 large bags. It can even handle the Brač or Hvar island roads with ease.

Booking Advice

5 things to know before booking a Luxury car in Croatia

Luxury cars aren’t necessary for every trip, but if you want to decide one that suits your itinerary, these five tips are worth knowing before you book.

The security deposit is significantly higher than standard categories

Around €1,000–€3,500 may be held on your card at pickup for luxury segments. Make sure you have a credit balance on your card. Debit card deposits are often declined.

Minimum age is 25 and over, not 18–21

Standard cars can usually be booked by 18–21-year-old drivers. Premium and luxury categories usually require drivers to be at least 25 and sometimes older for top-tier cars.

Cross-border travel is not automatically permitted

Taking a luxury rental into Bosnia or Montenegro is not permitted by default. A prior written approval from the supplier, a cross-border fee, and a green card are generally required.

Compare prices from different suppliers before booking

Weigh up prices and inclusions offered for the required vehicle by multiple suppliers to secure the best deal without overpaying.

Full-to-full fuel policy is standard – fill up before the drop-off

Luxury cars are usually provided with full fuel tanks and must be returned the same way. Returning with less fuel incurs refuelling and supplier service fees.

Where to Pick up

Luxury car availability by airport

Croatia’s major airports generally offer the largest luxury fleets. Availability and vehicle options can still vary by location and season.

Split Airport

Split has the deepest luxury fleet on the coast, with the strongest year-round availability of BMW 5, E-Class, and A6-class sedans among Croatia’s airports.

Dubrovnik Airport

Wide luxury selection given Dubrovnik’s size. Usually offers the same sedan lineup as Split, though stocks may be limited in peak summer weeks.

Zagreb Airport

The smallest luxury inventory of the group. BMW 5 and Mercedes E-Class are occasionally available. Book as early as possible or pick up from Split.

Zadar Airport

Comparatively thinner luxury stock. Confirm availability before booking. You can also opt for Standard or Full-size categories instead.

Rijeka Airport

The smallest luxury inventory of the group. BMW 5 and Mercedes E-Class are occasionally available. Book as early as possible or pick up from Split.

City pickup in Split & Zagreb

Downtown pickup locations are available in both cities as an alternative to the airport counter.

🚗

Where can I rent a luxury car in Croatia?

Luxury cars are offered by both major international suppliers like Sixt, Alamo, Enterprise and domestic suppliers like Mack, Avant, Livcar across major cities and airports in Croatia. Note that luxury car availability can vary by location based on demand. So where you land matters as much as who you book with.

CityWhat it’s known for
ZagrebMost consistent year-round sedan stock – best for business travel
SplitWidest coastal selection, strongest in the May–September window
DubrovnikGood selection overall, but tightest during peak summer weeks

🚙

Can I rent a luxury SUV in Croatia?

Yes. Popular models like the BMW X5, Mercedes GLC, and Range Rover Evoque are available for booking with both international and Croatian suppliers. This category has noticeably less stock than luxury sedans, so book further ahead if you need a specific SUV model for your itinerary.

🅰️

Are luxury rental cars available with automatic transmission?

Yes. Luxury rental cars in Croatia are mostly automatic by default, as opposed to the commonly manual standard and economy categories. While you can always choose a premium vehicle with either transmission, automatic variants of the same car can cost €15–20/day more. Sometimes an automatic luxury is the only option you can book for a certain model.

📆

How far in advance should I book a luxury car in Croatia?

How early you need to book depends heavily on when and where you will be arriving. Because Croatia is a highly seasonal market, luxury fleets are relatively smaller than demand. As a result, the already limited stock in this category runs out faster during peak summer travel.

SituationRecommended lead time
July–August (peak season)2–3 months ahead
Rest of the year2–4 weeks ahead
Sparsely available models (SUV, convertible)As early as possible, regardless of season

💳

How much is the security deposit for a luxury rental car?

The security deposit is not a charge, but a certain amount held by suppliers on your credit card at the time of car collection. The exact amount of the deposit is determined by your selected luxury car and rental insurance coverage.

ScenarioDeposit held
Standard booking€1,000–€3,500
With full protection purchasedOften reduced to around €1,000

🛡️

What type of insurance is included with a luxury car rental?

Luxury rentals in Croatia generally come with the same standard coverage as other categories, but the excess for premium vehicles is relatively higher given the value of the car.

CoverageIncluded as standard?
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)Yes
Theft protectionYes
Third-party liabilityYes
Zero-excess / full protectionNo – optional upgrade

🔒

Do I need full protection for a luxury car rental?

A full protection policy is optional, but it helps lower your excess (minimum amount you must pay in case of vehicle damage or theft) and deposit, sometimes from €3,000+ down to around €1,000. Though it may not be a necessity, full protection is often purchased by travellers for complete peace of mind.

📄

What documents do I need to rent a luxury car in Croatia?

Required documentation for a luxury car hire is similar to standard rentals in Croatia. However, suppliers may require additional paperwork for premium vehicles.

DocumentRequirement
Valid Driver’s licenceHeld for at least 1–2 years (varies by supplier)
Passport or national IDRequired for identity verification
Credit cardIn the main driver’s name for the security deposit hold
International Driving Permit (IDP)Required if your licence is in a non-Latin alphabet (e.g. Arabic, Japanese, Chinese) or from a non-EU country
Rental Confirmation VoucherRequired to verify your booking details at the time of vehicle collection

🧑

What is the minimum age to rent a luxury car in Croatia?

The minimum age to hire a luxury car from a majority of suppliers in Croatia is 25. But this limit may change from one supplier to another. Drivers under the required minimum age may be subject to a young driver fee.

CategoryMinimum ageYoung-driver surcharge
Standard cars18–21N/A
Premium/luxury25~€5–10/day if under 25, where allowed at all

💳

Do I need a credit card to rent a luxury car?

Yes. Regardless of the payment method you use during online booking, most rental companies in Croatia require a credit card to hold a refundable security deposit at pickup. The card should be in the main driver’s name. The deposit is released in full after the car is safely returned in the same condition as it was picked up.

👨‍✈️

Can I add an additional driver to a luxury car rental?

Yes. Additional drivers are one of the optional extras that you can add to your luxury rental for an additional fee of €5-15/day. Some deals may allow the first additional driver at no extra charge, but a per-day fee generally applies. Each additional driver is also subject to the same age and driver licence requirements as the main driver.

🔁

Can I pick up a luxury rental car in one Croatian city and return it in another?

Yes. One-way rentals between major cities and airports in Croatia are possible. Enable the ‘Different Drop-off Location?’ option on the booking form to find available deals for your preferred pickup and drop-off points. The supplier will charge a drop-off fee, usually higher for luxury cars, based on your chosen one-way route.

DetailWhat to expect
AvailabilityOffered between major cities and airports
Typical drop-off fee€200–300
Luxury/SUV vs standard carsOften costs more – fewer cars available to reposition to the drop-off city

♾️

Do I get unlimited mileage with a luxury car rental?

Unlimited mileage is usually included in most luxury car rental deals on our platform. But it’s not a standard practice with all suppliers and for all Croatian locations, so a mileage cap of about 200-300km/day may apply for some luxury vehicles. Driving beyond the permitted daily limit incurs a per-kilometre charge as per supplier policies.

🛂

Can I take a luxury rental car to Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Slovenia?

Cross-border travel is usually permitted to neighbouring countries with prior written approval from the supplier. But some suppliers block their luxury or premium categories from crossing any border at all, regardless of fee or notice period. Ask your supplier to confirm whether your preferred vehicle is allowed to cross the border from Croatia.

DestinationRequirement
Slovenia (EU/Schengen)No border paperwork; you’ll need a Slovenian toll vignette instead of Croatia’s toll system
MontenegroAdvance notice, plus a cross-border fee (€20–60) and a green card or cross-border permit
Bosnia and HerzegovinaAdvance notice, plus a cross-border fee (€20–60) and a green card or cross-border permit
