Economy Car Rental in Croatia

Economy cars are small-size rental segments, usually with 4–5-door models. Unless you have specifically booked a certain model, the exact car you get depends on the supplier, location, and availability. This means that the model shown on your booking indicates you may receive that car or a similar one in the same category.

Note: Boot space varies quite a bit between car models. The Fiat Panda has a particularly small boot, while cars such as the VW Polo, Seat Ibiza, and Kia Rio offer more luggage space.

Not always. Rental quotes are listed by vehicle category (size, seats, transmission type). So when a deal is displayed as ‘Opel Corsa or similar’, it means you are booking the car type, not the specific make or model. When browsing deals using our booking form, look for the ‘Guaranteed Car Model’ label if you want to book a particular model.

Yes, but their availability may be limited and may cost more than manual economy cars. Croatia’s rental fleets are mostly manual-transmission vehicles due to local preference. Automatic cars are relatively scarce and are booked faster by international travellers during peak season.

⚠️ Book as early as possible and pick up from a major location if you need an automatic. Supplier branches in smaller cities and island locations mainly offer manuals.

💡 If you are comfortable driving either transmission, choose a manual car hire to get better availability and lower rates in Croatia. Most of the country’s road network offers easy manual driving. 

Economy cars can seat up to 5 passengers, though they may have less luggage room than compacts. Most cars in this category can accommodate 2 medium-sized suitcases and a small carry-on bag when all seats are occupied, though this can vary by model.

💡 Consider passenger count and luggage space before booking a car, as a compact can ensure comfort on a multi-day road trip and is worth the modest cost difference.  

21 is usually the minimum age required by most suppliers, but drivers as young as 18 may also be allowed to book with some suppliers. A young driver fee often applies to those under 25.

ℹ️ This car segment is usually accessible to young drivers, who are often restricted from booking large or premium vehicles. Always confirm the driver age and licence requirements before making a reservation.

Standard documentation required to book with most rental companies in Croatia is as follows:

• Full valid driving licence held for at least 1-2 years, depending on the supplier
• Passport or national ID card
• Credit card in the primary driver’s name
• Booking confirmation voucher 
• International Driving Permit (IDP), if applicable

⚠️ The credit card must belong to the driver listed as primary on the rental agreement, as it will be required for the security deposit hold. A travel companion’s or family member’s card in a different name will be refused for pickup at the desk.

ℹ️ Photocopies and digital images of documents on a phone are generally not accepted at the rental counter, so make sure to bring original physical documents. Learner’s permits and provisional licences are also not accepted.

The need for an IDP (International Driving Permit) is usually based on the script used in your original licence rather than your nationality. But sometimes non-EU licence holders may be required to carry an IDP by some suppliers. It may also be required for crossing international borders from Croatia into neighbouring countries, even if the supplier may not request it.

💡 Arrange an IDP before travel to avoid any hassle during your visit or cross-border travel, if unsure. Any additional driver is usually subject to the same age and licence requirements as the primary driver.

You may not need a credit card to book online, but most rental companies need it to hold a refundable security deposit at car pickup. The card should be in the main driver’s name and have a sufficient credit balance to cover the deposit amount. Debit and cash deposits are rarely encouraged and require higher deposit and insurance levels when used.

✅ Check whether your travel companion can be registered as the main driver and use their card to book if you don’t have a personal credit card. You can be added as an additional driver in that situation.

Most suppliers usually permit cross-border travel with rental cars with prior written authorisation. You will also need to pay a cross-border fee and provide additional paperwork. This must be declared and approved when booking or at the time of car pickup, not at the border itself.

⚠️ Crossing any border without written authorisation from the supplier typically voids insurance coverage. The renter is fully responsible for any expenses incurred during an unauthorised cross-border travel.

Taking a rental car on a ferry to Croatian islands is usually allowed, but you must obtain prior approval from the supplier. A ferry permit or surcharge may apply, depending on supplier policies.

Important: These routes require a car ferry, not a passenger catamaran. Foot-passenger services such as Split–Hvar Town and Split–Korčula Town do not carry rental cars. Review the supplier’s ferry travel policies before booking.

💡 It is better to leave the rental car on the mainland and take a passenger catamaran as a foot passenger for a short visit or day trip to Brač or Hvar Town. That way you can avoid the ferry surcharge, vehicle queue at the port, and parking hassle on the island.  

The security deposit amount varies by rental and is based on your chosen supplier, car category, and insurance policy. Across Croatia, deposits can vary considerably, with some standard rentals requiring around €300–€1,200, while certain offers may require more. The deposit is not a charge but a temporary hold on the main driver’s credit card at pickup, and it is fully refunded provided the car is returned undamaged and with no outstanding charges.

ℹ️ Adding Super CDW or Full Protection insurance to your rental for an additional fee can help reduce or fully eliminate the deposit. The amount is usually released within 7-21 days after the car hire return, but the timeline also depends as much on your credit card issuer as on the supplier.

Third-Party Liability (TPL) is mandatory under Croatian law and is offered by most suppliers by default. Nearly all standard car rental deals also include CDW and Theft Protection, but you may still be liable for out-of-pocket expenses in case of vehicle damage or third-party claims.

⚠️ Any form of full protection does not cover damage caused while driving under the influence, for driving the car in restricted areas or road types, or incidents involving an unregistered additional driver.
