Cross Border Car Rental

The price for a rental car for this route includes the daily rental rate and the cross-border fees. For a single-day trip, the cross-border fee can be higher than the car itself.

A cross-border fee of about €50–90 per rental usually applies in addition to the daily rate. An additional driver usually costs about €5–10 per day, and drivers under 25 may pay a young driver fee of about €5–30 per day. You pay tolls on the Croatian A1 motorway and fuel separately.

The cross-border fee covers the supplier’s written permission and the insurance certificate (Green Card) for Bosnia. Ask the supplier whether the fee is included in the booking price or must be paid at the pickup desk to avoid surprises. 

💡 Traveller Tip: Compare the total price instead of just the daily rate if you are staying only for a day. A cheap car with a high fee can cost more than a slightly pricier car with the fee included.

Usually not. Most suppliers need a credit card in the main driver’s name to hold the security deposit. A few accept debit cards, but with a higher deposit or extra insurance. The deposit is a separate amount from the booking price and is only held temporarily on your card. It is released after you return the car with no damage or fines. The security deposit is usually about €800 to over €2,000, but the exact amount varies by car type and insurance coverage. Some suppliers may raise the hold for trips into Bosnia.

📌 Note: A full protection insurance policy can lower the deposit, and a few suppliers accept debit cards with it. Check the terms before you book.

Yes. Most suppliers allow additional drivers. This is useful on this route because the round trip is 5–6 hours of driving, plus the border.

• Fee: About €5–10 per day. Some suppliers cap the total for the whole rental.
• Requirements: The extra driver must meet the same age and licence rules as the main driver.
• Young drivers: Drivers under 25 may also pay the young driver fee.
• At pickup: Add the driver at the desk and bring their licence and passport. Only drivers listed in the rental agreement are insured.

⚠️ Important: Everyone in the car must carry their passport for border checks, as the rule does not apply to the driver only.

Not on most rentals. Cross-border one-way drop-offs are not standard. Most suppliers may allow cross-border travel but require you to make a round trip and return the car to its pickup point. Many suppliers prohibit cross-border travel altogether. One-way deals for cross-border rentals are subject to availability, and the additional fee is generally high when allowed.

⚠️ Important: Never leave the car in Bosnia without the supplier’s written approval. Unapproved drop-offs can lead to additional fees or fines in some cases.

Yes, unlimited mileage is usually included as standard, but it depends on the offer. Some deals may include a daily mileage cap, and driving more than that incurs a per-kilometre fee. 

The round trip is about 340 km before you make any detours. In that case, a daily limit of 300–500 km could matter if you add stops like Počitelj or Kravica Falls.

Call your rental supplier immediately using the contact details on your rental agreement. The supplier will decide whether to fix or replace the car. Any repairs made without the supplier’s knowledge or approval may not be covered by rental insurance. You can follow the steps below in case of a car breakdown:

• Move the car to a safe place, turn on the hazard lights and place the warning triangle.
• Call 112 if anyone is hurt.
• Call your rental supplier and follow their instructions.
• Keep every receipt and take photos of the car and the scene.

⚠️ Important: Some suppliers do not offer breakdown help or a replacement car outside Croatia. Check your rental terms before you cross the border.

Yes. It is a long and tiring drive, but you can manage it if you leave early. Each way takes about 2.5–3 hours of drive time, including the border.

You may not get much time for extra stops along the way. An overnight stay in Mostar gives you a more relaxed option for exploring Počitelj or Kravica Falls.

💡 Tip: Border queues can reach 30–60 minutes on July–August weekends. Return earlier in the day in summer.

💡 Tip: Book a full 24-hour rental. Then you can collect the car in the morning and return it the next morning.

Most drivers choose the quieter inland route through Imotski/Kamensko. It has one border crossing and takes about 2.5–3 hours. The other option follows the A1 motorway to the Bijača crossing and takes about 3–3.5 hours.

Neither route goes near the Neum corridor, so you will only need to cross the border once.
