General Requirements

What you need to cross any border from Croatia

Sed ut perspiciatis unde omnis iste natus sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium totam rem aperiam enim

🌍

Cross-border authorisation (non-EU)

For Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania and Serbia, you must declare your destination at booking. The permit must appear on your printed rental agreement — it cannot be added retroactively.

🪪

Passport or EU national ID

Non-Schengen crossings require a full passport. EU citizens may use their national ID for EU-to-EU crossings, but a passport is always recommended.

🚗

Driving Licence

Full licence held for at least 12 months. Non-Latin-script licences require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Minimum age is typically 21; surcharges apply for 21–24.

🛡️

Insurance Green Card

For EU countries your standard Green Card applies. For non-EU countries (MNE, BIH, ALB, SRB) you need the destination country explicitly endorsed on your Green Card.

💳

Credit Card in driver’s name

A credit card — not debit — in the main driver’s name is required at pickup for the refundable security deposit.

📄

Rental agreement & vignettes

Carry your full rental agreement at all times. Some countries require motorway vignettes (Austria, Slovenia). Check country guides for specifics.

Josip Stjepan – Croatia Travel & Car Rental Specialist

Josip spent a decade coordinating vehicle logistics for Jadrolinija’s ferry network, matching rental cars to sailing schedules for Hvar, Brač, and Korčula. The job gave him insider insights into where exactly rental companies quietly pass costs onto tourists. Drawing from his extensive knowledge of Croatia’s ferry network, coastal routes, and driving conditions, he helps travellers compare rental options, plan efficient itineraries, understand toll roads, avoid unnecessary fees, and prepare for cross-border travel.
