About Rijeka Train Station
Rijeka Train Station is the main rail gateway to the Kvarner Gulf and Croatia’s largest port city. Locally known as Željeznički kolodvor Rijeka, the station opened in 1873 and has undergone several redevelopments since. It handles direct services to Zagreb and Ljubljana. Local and international passengers can also avail seasonal connections to Munich.
The adjacent bus station (Autobusni kolodvor) is located directly alongside and creates a combined transport hub for passengers. The station is about 1 km from the Korzo (Rijeka’s main pedestrian promenade) and within easy walking distance of the ferry port that connects the mainland to Kvarner islands.

Rent a Car at Rijeka Train Station to Explore Kvarner & Beyond
Rijeka Train Station is the main rail arrival point for travellers who wish to explore the Kvarner Gulf and Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast. You can move from the train platform to your destination without a transfer or a wait by picking up a car hire from suppliers located within walking distance of the station. From here, Opatija is twenty minutes away, the Učka Tunnel puts Istria within half an hour, and the A6 motorway connects you to Zagreb in under two hours.
Travelling at your own pace means ferry timetables and bus schedules no longer dictate your itinerary. You can choose from flexible deals across different car categories for both short and long-term stays. Booking early secures better rates and a wider choice of vehicles. Best Time to Book

Watch out
Always choose a “full to full” fuel policy with unlimited mileage — saves money on return and eliminates mileage concerns.
Benefit from Optional Add-ons
Must do
Enhance your trip with child seats, GPS, winter tyres, snow chains, WiFi or an additional driver at affordable extra cost.
Book in Advance
Required
Reserving early secures below-average rates and gives you access to a wider selection of vehicle categories.
Select the Right Car Category
Mostly city driving? An economy or compact car keeps fuel costs low and suits tighter budgets and narrow Croatian roads.
Comparison is Key

Driving tips
On the road around Rijeka Train Station
Don’t drive into the Korzo
Pedestrian zone
No visitor vehicle access. Park at Delta or Srednja Delta and walk. Korzo is under 10 min away.
Avoid Adamić Street
Auto fine
Restricted to buses and taxis. Use Riva or Ivan Zajc Street instead.
Expect tolls on the A7
Around €1–3 of tolls is charged on parts of the Rijeka bypass. Učka Tunnel and the A6 toward Zagreb have separate tolls.
Driving to Slovenia
Cross border
Buy a Slovenian e-vignette before entering the motorway network or risk hefty fines.
Watch for one-way streets near the station
Carefully follow the signage from the station area to one-way roads in central Rijeka.
Expect city-centre traffic
Traffic can build up around the station, port area, and waterfront during weekday rush hours. Allow extra time when departing.
Driving onto a ferry
Follow staff instructions when boarding. Keep your parking brake on and leave the car in gear or park during the crossing.

Reliable Cars
VerifiedI had to rent because my own car was in for repairs. Booking process was easy and the car itself was quite good than I expected. Return was pleasant; the only issue was the deposit hold that took longer than what the email said it would. Got a full refund eventually, so no actual problem. Good service and satisfied with the whole experience.

Great family rental
VerifiedThe car was ready when we arrived. It was clean with child seats already fitted. Travelled with three kids in the back for a week. The car handled the roads well and had plenty of boot space for our stuff. The kids made a fuss at the desk but the staff was kind and patient. They quickly gave us the keys and we finished the trip with no issues.

🏢
Where can I find car rental desks at Rijeka Train Station?
It’s a few minutes’ walk from the station to the supplier depots serving this location, since there are no desks inside the terminal building itself. A small number of suppliers offer a meet-and-greet service to help you get to the rental desk.
ℹ️ Refer to your rental confirmation voucher to find the exact location of your supplier’s rental office, rather than using a generic search. Some supplier branches are also on adjacent harbour-front streets from the station entrance.
🚗
Should I rent a car at Rijeka Train Station?
It depends on which places you plan to explore. Rijeka is one of the best departure points in Croatia for a train-in and drive-out itinerary. The A6 motorway to Zagreb is fast and well-maintained, the Učka Tunnel puts Istria within 30 minutes, and the Kvarner coast road south is among the most scenic drives in the country. Consider renting a car if your itinerary involves covering these routes.
| Direction | Road / Route | Key Destinations | Drive Time from Rijeka |
| South along the coast | A1 / Magistrala (D8) | Senj, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik | 1h30 / 2h30 / 4h30 / 6h30 |
| West into Istria | A8 / Učka Tunnel | Opatija, Pula, Rovinj, Poreč | 20 min / 1h30 / 2h / 2h15 |
| Northeast to Zagreb | A6 / A1 | Karlovac, Zagreb | 1h15 / 1h45 |
| Northwest into Slovenia / Italy | E61 / A10 (SLO) | Postojna, Ljubljana, Trieste | 45 min / 1h30 / 1h |
| Kvarner islands | D102 / ferry | Krk (bridge), Cres, Lošinj (ferry) | 30 min (Krk) / ferry-dependent |
🔁
Can I pick up a car hire from Rijeka Train Station and return it to a different location?
Yes. One-way rentals from Rijeka to other Croatian cities or airports, such as Dubrovnik and Split, are offered by many major suppliers. A drop-off fee applies based on your chosen car type and one-way route.
| Route | Distance | Typical One-Way Fee | Notes |
| Rijeka → Zagreb or ZAG Airport | ~165 km | €30–80 | Common route; well supported; same-country repositioning |
| Rijeka → Zadar or ZAD Airport | ~250 km | €50–120 | Popular for travellers starting in Kvarner and ending in north Dalmatia |
| Rijeka → Split or SPU Airport | ~380 km | €80–150 | Most common longer one-way; nearly all major suppliers offer it |
| Rijeka → Dubrovnik or DBV | ~590 km | €120–220 | Longest and most expensive to reposition; confirm with supplier before booking |
| Rijeka → Pula or Istrian locations | ~120 km | €30–70 | Useful for Kvarner-into-Istria itineraries |
✅ One-way rental may not be available for all routes and car categories. Use your travel details to view deals available for your preferred locations and required vehicle.
🛡️
What insurance type is included in car rentals at Rijeka Train Station?
Third Party Liability is mandatory for all vehicles in Croatia and is always included with rental cars. Standard deals often also offer Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection, but may still leave you financially responsible for the excess.
| Cover Type | What It Covers | Included? |
| TPL (Third Party Liability) | Injury or damage caused to other people or property | Always included – mandatory by law |
| CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) | Limits liability for damage to the rental vehicle’s bodywork | Usually included; excess applies |
| TP (Theft Protection) | Limits liability if vehicle is stolen | Usually included; excess applies |
| SCDW / Excess Waiver | Reduces or eliminates the CDW/TP excess | Optional upgrade; typically €10–20/day at the desk |
| Tyre & Glass Protection | Windscreen, windows, and tyre damage | Excluded by default; available as add-on |
| Underbody / Roof Damage | Damage from kerb scrapes, low barriers, or rough surfaces | Excluded from all standard cover |
🚫 Underbody and roof damage are excluded from all standard CDW coverage. Travellers planning to explore the Kvarner and Istrian back roads can find a Super CDW particularly useful, as parts of these routes can damage the undercarriage.
👨✈️
Is there a young driver fee for car rentals for someone under 25?
Yes. Although drivers as young as 21 are usually permitted by suppliers to rent cars, a young driver surcharge is standard for those under 25. It is charged as a daily fee on top of the base rental rate and applies to both primary drivers and any additional drivers who fall within the relevant age bracket. Drivers under the required minimum age may also be restricted to certain vehicle categories, like economy or compact.
| Age bracket | Eligibility | Young driver surcharge | Restrictions |
| Under 21 | Select suppliers only | Daily surcharge applies; higher deposit hold | Economy and compact categories only; very limited availability |
| 21–22 | Most suppliers | ~€10–18/day | Some suppliers exclude larger SUV and premium categories |
| 23–24 | All major suppliers | ~€8–15/day | Standard fleet generally accessible; some premium exclusions |
| 25 and over | All suppliers | No surcharge | Full vehicle range; standard rental terms apply |
💶
How much is the excess for car rentals at Rijeka Train Station?
The excess is the amount you are personally liable for in the event of damage or theft, even when CDW and Theft Protection are included in your rental. It is separate from the refundable security deposit held on your card at pickup. Purchasing a Super CDW can help you reduce or eliminate the excess for an added daily fee of €10–20.
| Vehicle category | Examples | Typical excess under standard CDW |

Are there toll roads on routes from Rijeka?
Yes. There are several toll roads from Rijeka, and the collection method for those varies between Croatian motorways (ticket-based) and the Učka Tunnel (point toll). There is no sticker or pass to buy before your trip. All tolls are collected at physical gates, payable in cash, by card, or via the ENC electronic transponder.
| Route | Toll Type | Approx. One-Way Cost (Cat. I car) | Notes |
| A6 / ARZ: Rijeka → Zagreb | Ticket system | ~€6–10 | Operated by ARZ (Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb); scenic mountain section |
| Učka Tunnel (to Istria) | Point toll | ~€5–7 | Single toll booth at the tunnel entrance on the Rijeka side; no ticket to keep |
| A1 (from Bosiljevo interchange south to Split) | Ticket system | ~€10–12 (Bosiljevo–Split) | Connects via A6 from Rijeka; full Zagreb–Split ~€15–17 |
| Krk Bridge | n/a – toll-free | Free since 2020 | No toll in either direction; used for Rijeka Airport and Krk island access |
⚠️ Vehicles over 1.9 m in height (including a roof box or roof tent) are classified as category II on toll booths in Croatia. The rate for such a vehicle can be almost double that of a standard passenger car. So, remove roof carriers if possible before entering the motorway network.

Where can I park near Rijkea Train Station?
The train station area is part of Zone 1 parking, which offers affordable, unlimited on-street parking if you’re picking up or dropping off a vehicle at nearby supplier branches.
| Option | Type | Approx. Rate | Notes |
| On-street Zone 1 spaces near the station | Street parking | ~€0.80/hr | No time limit; available on harbour-front streets adjacent to the station |
| Delta / Srednja Delta car park | Managed surface car park (Rijeka plus) | €8/day ticket; weekly ~€22.56 | Located near the station and bus station area; open Mon–Fri 7:00–21:00, Sat 7:00–16:00; excellent for multi-day stays |
| Školjić car park | Managed surface (Rijeka plus) | Daily rate | Close to the waterfront near the station; useful for short to medium stays |
💡 Buy a weekly ticket from Rijeka plus (€22.56 + €3 card fee) to park a vehicle for stays longer than 4 days, as it can save costs on the daily parking fee. Use your ID and vehicle registration papers to buy it from the Rijeka plus office at Jelačić Square 3.

Are cross-border car rentals available from Rijeka Train Station?
Plenty of suppliers in Rijeka offer cross-border car hire deals, but you must obtain their authorisation in advance. Such deals are not automatically included and require a cross-border fee and additional insurance or a Green card, depending on your destination. Since Rijeka is located in the northwest corner of Croatia, travellers can easily make day trips to Slovenia and Italy.
| Country | Typically Permitted? | Additional Fee | Notes |
| Slovenia | Yes (EU) | €0–50 depending on supplier | Vignette required for Slovenian motorways; no passport check (Schengen); ~30–40 min from Rijeka to border at Rupa |
| Italy | Yes (EU / Schengen) | €0–50 depending on supplier | Confirm vehicle is authorised for Italy; Trieste ~1h from Rijeka via coastal road or A10 (Slovenia) |
| Austria | Yes (EU / Schengen) | €0–50 depending on supplier | Vignette required for Austrian motorways; routed via Slovenia; ~3h from Rijeka to Graz |
| Bosnia & Herzegovina | Yes (most suppliers) | ~€50 | Green Card required; confirm SCDW covers non-EU territory; Sarajevo ~5h from Rijeka via A1 south |
| Montenegro | Yes (most suppliers) | ~€50 | Green Card required; long drive from Rijeka (~7h+); better treated as an overnight destination |
| Albania / Kosovo / N. Macedonia | Select suppliers only | ~€50+ and SCDW mandatory | Confirm explicitly at booking – not all suppliers permit these destinations |
🚫 Driving a hired car across the border without the supplier’s written approval negates your insurance and incurs hefty penalties. This further leaves you fully responsible for all costs related to vehicle damage and third-party claims. Any additional drivers must also be listed on the rental agreement for the insurance to remain valid and effective.

Do I need to return a car rental with a full tank of fuel?
A full-to-full fuel policy is sort of a standard for most suppliers, under which you receive the car with a full tank and are required to return it full. Returning with less than a full tank results in a refuelling charge above market rate, plus a service fee. Fill up at a nearby petrol pump before returning the car, and keep the receipt safe as proof.
ℹ️ Less frequent but still in use options also include same-to-same and prepaid fuel policies. There are no refunds for unused fuel on either of these, so choose them after carefully reviewing your trip’s fuel usage.
↩️
Can I return a car hire after office hours?
Out-of-hours returns are offered by many suppliers upon prior arrangement and subject to applicable charges. Since Rijeka Train Station does not have a dedicated car hire area within the terminal building itself, you will need to return the car to supplier branches and vehicle lots within a few minutes’ walk.
✅ Opening hours may vary across suppliers, so you are to park and lock the rental car in the designated supplier lot, and return the keys in the secure key box or kiosk. The vehicle returned after office hours is often inspected on the next business day.
⚠️ Photograph or video the car thoroughly at the drop-off point and timestamp the images. This protects you against any later disagreements.
⛽
Where can I refuel before returning a rental car near Rijeka Train Station?
Rijeka is a major port city with good fuel coverage throughout the urban area. With plenty of options available, you can refill your car hire from INA, OMV fuel stations near the train station and harbour-front.
| Station / Brand | Approximate distance from train station | Fuel types available | Notes |
| INA (Školjić / harbour area) | ~5 min drive | 95, 98, diesel, AdBlue | Closest major branded station to the station and port area |
| OMV (Rijeka city) | ~5–8 min drive | 95, 98, diesel, AdBlue, EV charging | Modern facilities; card payment at pump |
| Petrol (city locations) | ~5–10 min drive | 95, 98, diesel | Slovenian chain; common across northern Croatia |
| INA (motorway / A6 approach) | ~10 min drive toward Zagreb | 95, 98, diesel, AdBlue, EV charging | Best option if returning a car after a motorway journey – refuel before exiting rather than navigating city streets |
ℹ️ If coming back from a motorway trip on the A6 or via the Učka Tunnel, filling up at an INA motorway service area before your exit is a better option than finding a fuel station in the city centre.
