Umag does not have its own airport. The closest option for travellers is Pula Airport (PUY), located approximately 80 km to the south, and it takes around 50 minutes by car on the E751/A9 motorway.

ℹ️ You can pick up a car hire from a downtown supplier in Umag rather than from an airport-based supplier to save airport surcharges. This is especially convenient for travellers already staying in town.

A majority of suppliers in Croatia offer car rentals with a full-to-full fuel policy, which requires you to return the car with a full tank as when received. The supplier charges a higher rate above the market price for returning the vehicle with missing fuel, along with a service fee. Some suppliers may also offer a pre-paid fuel option (you pay for a full tank upfront and return the car on empty). This might not be a good option unless you’re fully sure about using the last drop of fuel.

✅ Fill up at an INA station near Umag before returning the vehicle. There are no refunds for unused fuel at drop-off, whether it’s a pre-paid or same-to-same policy.

Many car rental companies in Umag offer after-hours returns, provided the arrangements are made in advance. Although the operating hours vary by suppliers, the standard process includes parking the car in the designated space and locking it before leaving the keys in a secure key box at the rental office. The old town peninsula itself is pedestrian-only, meaning no visitor vehicles are allowed to enter or park within. They can instead park at nearby lots and take a short walk to the historic centre.

⛔ The waterfront lots and marina-adjacent zones are the most practical for a full-day visit.

Zone 2 offers the best balance of cost and convenience for most visitors. It’s located within walking distance of the old town and has lower hourly rates and daily caps than Zone 1.

• Zone 1 is best for short visits and short access to the old town.
• Zone 2 is more suitable for half-day or full-day stays and offers better overall value.
• Tržnica and Ledo car parks are meant for short stops only, as rates increase after the first hour.

💡 Parking in Zones 1 and 2 is free on Sundays and public holidays from October to March during the winter season.

Driving within Umag itself and on local state roads is toll-free. But since Croatian motorways are tolled, tolls are charged for using the A9 (the Istrian Y motorway) at exit plazas and can be paid in cash or by card. A typical day trip from Umag to Poreč and back usually costs around €4–8 in motorway tolls.

ℹ️ A Slovenian e-vignette is also required to cross the border into Slovenia and use Slovenian motorways. Purchase it online before crossing.

Cross-border travel into neighbouring countries, including Slovenia, Italy, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, is permitted only after the rental company’s prior approval. You must also pay a cross-border fee and obtain a Green Card for insurance coverage. Not all suppliers permit all countries, so check the rental terms at the time of booking.

⛔ Unauthorised cross-border travel will void your rental insurance and may result in hefty fines from the supplier. Also, purchase a Slovenian e-vignette online before entering the motorway network if you plan to use Slovenian motorways.

Almost all rental cars include standard third-party liability insurance required under Croatian law. Often, theft protection (TP) and collision damage waiver (CDW) are also provided by many suppliers. The excess, despite those, may still be high against vehicle damage. You can buy a full protection upgrade at the time of booking to remove excess liability entirely and extend cover to excluded items. 

The excess with standard CDW in Croatia varies by car category. It is the amount you have to pay before insurance covers any remaining damage or theft costs.

⚠️ Purchasing Super CDW or a full protection policy reduces the excess to zero. Travellers with credit card coverage or third-party insurance are also required to pay the excess amount to the rental company first and reclaim it separately.

Standard CDW coverage does not include damage to the vehicle’s undercarriage, tyres, wheels, roof, or windows. A super CDW or a full protection policy is thus purchased by travellers alongside standard insurance to avoid out-of-pocket expenses for vehicle and third-party damage.

ℹ️ Consider additional protection only if you plan to explore the unpaved roads or remote areas. Also, review the existing insurance policy to know what’s included before buying an optional policy.

The minimum age to rent a car with most suppliers in Umag is 21. Sometimes drivers as young as 18 are allowed to book specific vehicle categories, but a Young Driver Surcharge applies to those under 25 and is calculated daily. These conditions are applicable to both the main driver and any additional drivers.

ℹ️ Confirm the young driver surcharge for your specific age and chosen car category before booking, as it can add €5–15/day to the total cost.

Suppliers like Sixt offer automatic rental cars in Umag downtown. But automatic rentals may be in short supply due to the comparatively cheaper manual-transmission rentals, which are mainly booked by travellers in Croatia.
