The security deposit amount varies by supplier, vehicle category, and insurance package. It is merely held temporarily on your credit card at pickup and released in full after the car is returned in the same condition as when collected, with no outstanding fines or fuel shortfall.

Returning the car with less fuel than agreed results in a refuelling charge at rates often above the local pump price, plus a service fee.

You may use a debit card to book online, but a credit card in the main driver’s name is required at the supplier counter to process the refundable security deposit hold. Cross-border travel is permitted by several suppliers at OSI, subject to prior written authorisation obtained before your rental begins. Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia are among the most commonly approved destinations. An additional cross-border fee applies and varies by country. Some vehicle categories may not be entirely allowed for cross-border use.

Croatia does not use a motorway vignette system, as tolls are charged per section at booths. But the neighbouring European countries may have different requirements. Hungary requires a digital vignette (matrica) for all motorway driving, which can be purchased online or at fuel stations near the border. Slovenia also requires a vignette for motorway use, available at fuel stations before or at the border crossing. Bosnia and Herzegovina does not use a vignette system; tolls are paid at booths.

The need for a Green Card for your rental car depends primarily on your supplier’s policies and destination. In most cases, a Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate) is required when driving a hired car outside the European Union/EEA, such as in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Montenegro. Make sure the supplier provides the physical Green Card document along with your rental contract before driving out of the country.

The blood alcohol limit in Croatia is 0.05% (0.5 g/L) for drivers aged 25 and over. Drivers under 25 and professional drivers must have a blood alcohol level of zero. Random breath tests are routine on Croatian roads. Penalties can include on-the-spot fines, licence suspension, and potential detention.

Winter tyres are legally required for all vehicles on certain Croatian roads from 15 November to 15 April. Although most rental cars at Osijek Airport include them automatically during winter, make sure to still confirm at pickup, as some motorways and inland routes around Osijek require winter tyres and even snow chains in severe conditions. You can also add winter equipment as an optional extra when booking.

Tolls on Croatian motorways are paid at staffed or automated booths at the end of each motorway section. You can use both cash (Croatian euro) and card payments at most tolls on the A3 and A5 routes. A few older or smaller booths on secondary routes may be cash-only, so keep a small amount of cash in the car as a backup option.
