Requirements & Documents

Before heading to pick up your rental car in Dubrovnik, ensure you are carrying the mandatory documents, including a full and valid driver’s license, passport/national ID, credit card and booking confirmation voucher. Additional documents, such as an International Driving Permit (IDP), will also be required if your license is not printed in the Latin alphabet (e.g., Cyrillic, Arabic, or Chinese).

EU, UK, and EEA licences are fully valid to rent a car in Dubrovnik, no IDP required. An IDP, however, is required if your licence is not in Latin script (e.g. Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic). US, Canadian, and Australian drivers with Latin-script licences are not legally required to carry one, but most rental companies and police strongly recommend having it as a supporting document.

Car hire companies allow drivers as young as 18 to rent cars, although 21 is the minimum age limit for a few. Note that drivers under 25 are subject to a young driver surcharge, typically €5 -€10 per day. Additional restrictions on hiring premium, large and prestige vehicles for young drivers are also imposed by suppliers.

International renters who hold a valid driver’s license, a passport, and a credit card can easily rent a car in Dubrovnik. However, for those whose driving license is issued in a non-Latin alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a certified translation of the driving license will be required for car hire.

For trips to non-EU countries such as Montenegro or Bosnia, you will need a Green Card for seamless border crossings. Your rental supplier will most likely provide one during vehicle collection either automatically or for a small fee. Make sure to confirm whether your rental includes a Green Card before driving across any non-EU border before pick-up.

A Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate) is the document that proves your vehicle has valid third-party insurance cover in non-Schengen countries.
