What type of insurance is included in the rental?
Third Party Liability is mandatory in Croatia and is included in nearly all rental cars. Some deals may also provide Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP) as standard benefits. Those may still leave you responsible for an excess amount of €1,000–1,200 for an economy car. This is why travellers often purchase an optional insurance policy to reduce or remove their out-of-pocket expenses.
| Cover | Included by default? | What it does |
| TPL (Third Party Liability) | Always | Covers damage/injury to others |
| CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) | Yes, with excess | Limits your liability, typically up to ~€1,000–1,200 |
| TP (Theft Protection) | Yes, with excess | Limits liability if the car is stolen |
| WUG (wheels/undercarriage/glass) | No – optional extra | Covers tyre, glass, and undercarriage damage |
💡 Standard cover usually excludes damage to wheels, the undercarriage, and glass. Consider that aspect if you plan to use routes with rough, narrow coastal roads.

Do I need additional insurance or a Green Card to drive through Bosnia and Herzegovina?
The standard Pula to Dubrovnik route stays in Croatia, as the Pelješac Bridge avoids the Neum corridor. You will not normally enter Bosnia. A Green Card and cross-border approval are only needed for planned detours, such as trips to Mostar or Montenegro.
💡 If you plan to leave Croatia, confirm in writing that your Green Card covers the country you will enter. This avoids problems at the border.

Can I use my credit card insurance for a one-way car rental?
Credit card insurance may cover your one-way car hire, but it is not standard with all suppliers. Check before paying extra for SCDW, as some premium credit cards cover the excess amount. This can reduce your costs without a daily upgrade fee.
⚠️ Confirm before you travel whether either your credit card insurance or travel insurance covers rental excess in Croatia. If either does, you may not need an SCDW.
