Rental Requirements

Almost all rental cars include standard third-party liability insurance required under Croatian law. Often, theft protection (TP) and collision damage waiver (CDW) are also provided by many suppliers. The excess, despite those, may still be high against vehicle damage. You can buy a full protection upgrade at the time of booking to remove excess liability entirely and extend cover to excluded items. 

The excess with standard CDW in Croatia varies by car category. It is the amount you have to pay before insurance covers any remaining damage or theft costs.

⚠️ Purchasing Super CDW or a full protection policy reduces the excess to zero. Travellers with credit card coverage or third-party insurance are also required to pay the excess amount to the rental company first and reclaim it separately.

Standard CDW coverage does not include damage to the vehicle’s undercarriage, tyres, wheels, roof, or windows. A super CDW or a full protection policy is thus purchased by travellers alongside standard insurance to avoid out-of-pocket expenses for vehicle and third-party damage.

ℹ️ Consider additional protection only if you plan to explore the unpaved roads or remote areas. Also, review the existing insurance policy to know what’s included before buying an optional policy.

The minimum age to rent a car with most suppliers in Umag is 21. Sometimes drivers as young as 18 are allowed to book specific vehicle categories, but a Young Driver Surcharge applies to those under 25 and is calculated daily. These conditions are applicable to both the main driver and any additional drivers.

ℹ️ Confirm the young driver surcharge for your specific age and chosen car category before booking, as it can add €5–15/day to the total cost.

Suppliers like Sixt offer automatic rental cars in Umag downtown. But automatic rentals may be in short supply due to the comparatively cheaper manual-transmission rentals, which are mainly booked by travellers in Croatia.

✅ Book your automatic well in advance if travelling in peak season (July–August), as available units are limited and sell out quickly.
