Can I take any type of rental car from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Not every category. Suppliers usually permit economy, compact, and standard cars to cross the Bosnian border. SUVs, minivans and premium vehicles are often restricted for such a trip and may be allowed with additional paperwork and fees.
β οΈ Important: A prior written authorisation from the supplier is mendatory for cross-border travel, along with additional insurance depending on which country you plan to enter. Make sure your rental agreement lists Bosnia and Herzegovina as the authorised destination at the time of car collection.

Can I visit Bosnia and other countries with the same rental car from Croatia?
You cannot enter two different countries unless they are specifically named in your rental agreement for cross-border travel. The supplier’s authorisation for taking the rental car into Bosnia does not give you permission to make a side trip into Montenegro or Serbia.
| Country | Permitted? | Key requirement |
| Bosnia & Herzegovina | Generally yes | Prior authorisation + BiH named on the agreement |
| Montenegro | Generally yes | Separate authorisation, even if Bosnia is already approved |
| Serbia | Only with select suppliers | Confirm Serbia is specifically listed before booking |

Can I rent an automatic car for cross-border travel?
Yes. Automatic cars are available, but rental fleets in Croatia are largely manual, and the number of automatic transmission vehicles is even lower for cross-border travel. Parts of the Bosnian route around Mostar and Sarajevo have hilly inclines, where an automatic can make the drive easier.
β οΈ Important: Automatics are especially scarce in peak travel season and require early booking. When searching for available options through our platform, you can use the applicable filter to view relevant deals with your preferred transmission.

Can I rent a car from Croatia to Bosnia & Herzegovina for one day?
Yes. Short-term car rentals are quite common among travellers for making day trips from locations like Dubrovnik or Split to Mostar and back. Sometimes, some suppliers require a minimum booking of 2-3 days for cross-border trips regardless of how long you are actually in Bosnia.
π‘ Tip: The cross-border fee is charged as a flat amount per rental, so a one-day trip costs the same border fee as a longer one.
