Cross-Border & Ferry Travel

Rovinj’s seasonal ferry connections to Venice are passenger-only and do not carry vehicles. To travel by car to Croatian islands such as Cres or Lošinj, you need to drive to Brestova terminal, approximately 70 km from Rovinj, which operates vehicle crossings. Most suppliers permit island ferry travel with prior written authorisation, and some apply a surcharge for island use.

⚠️Taking a rental car onto a ferry without supplier authorisation voids your insurance for any incident on the ferry or on the island. Confirm permission with your supplier before purchasing a vehicle ferry ticket.

Cross-border travel to Slovenia and Italy is commonly permitted but requires prior authorisation from your supplier and usually carries an additional cross-border fee. Rovinj’s position in western Istria makes border crossings relatively short. 

⚠️ Always obtain written cross-border authorisation from your supplier before travel. Crossing without it can void your insurance and leave you fully liable for any incident abroad.

It depends on your destination. Travel within EU and EEA countries such as Slovenia, Italy, and Austria is generally covered under your standard rental insurance, though some suppliers still charge a cross-border fee. For non-EU destinations such as Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro, additional insurance documentation (Green Card) is usually required and may not be automatically included in your policy.

ℹ️ Ask your supplier for a Green Card at pickup regardless of destination. It is straightforward for them to provide proof of insurance at border crossings and during roadside checks abroad.
