Cross-Border Travel & Driving

Can I take my rental car further into Montenegro from Dubrovnik?

Most suppliers allow cross-border travel from Croatia to neighbouring countries only with prior authorisation and a cross-border fee. Additional insurance or a Green Card may also be required, depending on which country you need to enter.

Crossing at Karasovići (the main Croatia–Montenegro crossing) can involve a wait of two to three hours at peak times in summer. If you can, plan outside the busiest midday hours.

Do I have to cross the Neum corridor, and is it allowed with a rental car?

No. A normal trip from Pula to Dubrovnik does not require you to cross the Neum corridor, a short stretch of Bosnian coastline that travellers previously relied on. Until the Pelješac Bridge opened in 2022, the corridor required two border crossings, but it now bypasses Neum and keeps the Pula–Dubrovnik drive inside Croatia.

🗺️

Are there border crossings or traffic delays on the Pula-Dubrovnik route?

Traffic on the standard route via the Pelješac Bridge usually moves without any delays, and the entire drive from Pula to Dubrovnik stays inside Croatia. Summer traffic causes the main delays. This is especially true around Split and Zadar and on the D8 south of Ploče, where the motorway ends and the road narrows to one lane in places.
