It depends on the destination. Hungary is in the EU — no Green Card required. Serbia is non-EU — a Green Card might be a requirement in most cases. In both cases, you must notify your supplier in advance and pay a cross-border fee. Driving across either border without prior written permission breaches your rental contract.

Request cross-border permission and your Green Card document at the rental desk before you drive away. The car is fully insured in Croatia – that cover does not automatically extend the moment you cross into another country. 

Although it is fairly safe to drive on Slavonian roads during autumn and winter seasons, the fog on the A5 motorway, heavy truck traffic, and occasional slowdowns near border crossings during peak travel days can certainly become an issue when driving in a rental car. The most practical advice to tackle this would be to check conditions before departure, allow extra time, and use headlights throughout.

Winter tyres are mandatory in Croatia from 15 November to 15 April when conditions require them – confirm your rental car is equipped accordingly.

While all major Slavonia day trip destinations, including Kopački Rit Nature Park, Baranja wine roads, and Vukovar, can be done without paying tolls, you will mainly encounter tolls when driving on A5 towards the north–south highway. Tolls on Croatian motorways operate on a simple ‘ticket-in / pay-at-exit’ system, wherein tickets are taken at entry and paid at exit. Pay by card or cash; most booths accept both.
